The depth indicator, showing the position of the cage in the shaft, clearly identifies this as Fraser No1 pit. The large winding drum around which the cable is wound, is seen to the right, circa 1950
Fraser pit was one of a number of mines opened or re-equipped c.1938 to feed the new Westwood Oil Works, and boost home oil production. It closed in 1951
