Photo - Four Hutches Full of Shale
code: LVSAV1998.040
Description
Black and white photograph of an incline carriage carrying a rake of 4 hutches full of shale, emerging from Hermand mine, c. 1950
Most mines followed the dip of the shale strata at a gradient of around 1 in 10 allowing hutches to he hauled directly to the surface. Occasionally the shale strata was too steep for this direct haulage and hutches had instead to be loaded onto special incline carriages. and brought to the surface
