Miner's token or check tally for miners at Young's Oil Company Mine No.5. No 61, c. 1920.
Young's No.5 mine possibly refers to Hopetoun No.5 mine, closed in 1946
Mine tokens were issued to record the number of miners underground. Each miner was allocated a unique number, and would remove his tally from a marker board at the beginning of each shift, replacing it on his return to the surface. The presence or absence of his token on a board at the pit head would indicated whether or not he was underground
