"This is to certify that the bearer Andrew Patterson has completed his apprenticeship here as a turner having been with us from 28th July 1919 to 22nd August 1924. We have proved him to be a capable and efficient worker and can thoroughly recommend him to any who may require his services. We have dispensed with his services as we have no work for another Journeyman"
Andrew Patterson (Paterson) born 18/05/1905, father of the donor, served an apprenticeship as a Turner / Journeyman with James Ross & Company at Philpstoun Oil Works from 1919 to 1924. During this time he completed a 3 year course in Engineering at Linlithgow Academy. From October 1924 to November 1926 he worked for William Aitken, Haulage Contractor & Coal Agent, Stockbridge, Linlithgow before becoming a Police Constable in Glasgow. His 2 brothers in law, James Orr and Tom Swan of Bridgend were both shale miners at Whitequarries
