Shale miner's lamp. Embossed with "Wells single torch lamp A G Wells & Co, No 5B, Strength and durability". "Will" painted on the base.
Believed to have belonged to the donor's grandfather, William Pryde, who worked as a shale miner and later mine manager in the Philpstoun area. Circa 1915
Object was found in the donor's mother's coal shed when in April 2012.The donor assumes it belonged to someone in her family. Her grandfathers, (paternal - John Stein and maternal - William Pryde) were both involved in the shale mining industry in the Philpstoun area of West Lothian. At the time of her father's birth in 1912 (at Bridgend Rows, Linlithgow) his father was a shale miner. He is described as a retired joiner when her parents married in 1941. At the time of her mother's birth in 1917 (in Blackness) her father was a shale miner. He is described as a shale mine under manager when her parents married in 1941. As far as I know he later became a mine manager, possibly at Old Philpstoun. Her parents lived in Winchburgh from mid 1940s and her father, Jim Stein, worked as an electrical engineer in the shale mines in that area (Totley Wells) until the mines closed in the early 1960s.
