Certificate of Attendance and Progress, Division II Mine Firemen's Class from Uphall Parish School Board, Broxburn Continuation School to certify that James Paterson attended the Mine Firemen's Class during the session 1912-1913.

He attended 33 hours out of a possible 36 hours and achieved 86% for his work. The certificate is signed by William Clark, Chairman of School Board, R C Wilson, Clerk and W Alan Hume, Headmaster.

The class covered the following:

  • The estimation of various percentages of fire-damp by the caps produced on the flame of a safety lamp. The student was taught to estimate the percentage of gas present by the height and intesnity of the cap
  • The detection, estimation, and chemical and pyhsical properties of gases generally met with in coal mines
  • The measurements of velocity of air by the use of an anemometer, and by other means
  • The reading of ventilation pressures by means of the water gauge, and the significance of such readings
  • The reading of wet and dry bulb thermometers, and the meaning of such readings
  • Owned by James Paterson, the donor's grandfather, from Broxburn, who was a Fireman and member of the Mine Rescue Team. He latterly worked at the Roman Camp mines
