Certificate of Qualification of Fireman, Examiner or Deputy for Alexander Gill Benson.
The certificate is dated 24th February 1931, was issued by Heriot-Watt College, Edinburgh and signed by J Cameron Smail, Principal of Heriot-Watt College. It certifies that the bearer is able to make accurate tests (so far as practicable with a safety lamp) for inflammable gas; measure the quantity of air in an air current and that his hearing is such as to enable him to carry out efficiently the duties of Fireman, Examiner or Deputy.
Alexander Gill Benson(born 21/06/1910, died 1994), residing at 7 Parkhead Cottages, West Calder, was a shale mine fireman and oversman with Scottish Oils Ltd., the son of Alexander Benson (born 31st March 1887) and Mary Benson (nee Haldane, born c. 1887) and was the uncle of the donor.
